Electrolux Conference in the late seventies with Keith Farrell

It is with great thanks to Claude being promoted to Manager of Electrocol (amalgamation of Electrolux and Columbus) in 1977 that he employed me as his country rep as that was the introduction I had to the furniture trade where I enjoyed working for six different companies over 20 years - the last was with Edblo for 13 years. Di and I had been hitch-hiking through Europe for 12 months, and two days after my return, Claude gave me Clive "Nipper" Napier's sales rep's position. And that is how I got to have so many friends and contacts in the FTA. Claude also got me to play baseball and softball for Vikings after having played for Marist (baseball) and King Edward Rhinos (softball) before leaving for our overseas jaunt. Apart from all the memorable games we played with and against one another, the memory I have of Claude happened at an Electrolux Conference in Cape Town (must have been 1978/9) and on the first day the MD said that we must all put our heads together to come up with a new slogan for Electrolux for their new sales campaign. That night, in the pub of course, Claude had centre stage and we were all coming up with words and ideas and the slogan we came up with was "Nothing Sucks Like Electrolux" thinking they would definitely throw that idea out of the window - but they didn't and that was still the company's slogan when I left SA in 1996!!! Always in our memories, my son. RIP.
