Let there be Light

Claude’s ingenuity always fascinated us. He could apparently repair everything or invent anything. Claude and Ingrid lived in the condo building adjacent to our own. During Florida hurricanes (Frances, Ivan or Jeanne), residents of Hutchinson Island were advised to evacuate. Most people complied. Not Claude. He and Ingrid weathered out the storm on the 14th floor of a swaying building, water in the bathtub sloshing, wind howling. No electricity, but that didn’t faze Claude. He somehow hooked up his household appliances to the emergency lighting system in the condo passageway. Consequently, when we returned to the island once curfew was lifted, but facilities were not restored, I was the beneficiary of Claude’s ingenuous contraption. Ingrid brewed breakfast coffee, and it was delivered to me by courier – Nic, who descended fourteen floors with a full thermos, came across to our unit, and then ascended again. No elevator. I have never drunk a more welcome mug of coffee! Thank you, Claude!
